    Help For Beaucarnea recurvata

Scrape off any soft material and spray the cleaned surface with black sealing tar. They sell it at home depot in a spray can and I've also seen it in a plastic tub with an applicator like rubber cement. I can't remember what it's called...pruning seal or something. We use it on cycads or any...

    California Plumeria growing...

In Tampa when winter gets cold the tips rot. There is a grower east of here that uses black landscape cloth to raise the temp. I've also seen trees in St. Pete that are half over black top and half over grass and the black top side has much more growth.

    new garden!

Hi Bren, with all the work you've done already you should be in great shape. My #1 advice is keep everything watered until rainy season kicks in. Every day watering is appropriate this time of year. My #2 best advice is to hang around Phil's house as much as possible. You can't go wrong with...

    Guerrilla Planting

Moose- did you dress up in black clothing and crawl on your belly? LOL. Broms are nice but I am removing 90-95% of what I have. There is only so much room in a yard.

    Large Banyan Trees

Moose- you are probably right, but back in those days it was usually a margarita or corona washing down kailua pig, poke fish, sashimi, or lomilomi. That place was open air, old fashioned with linoleum floors. Best view in town. It looks like old Kona town hasn't changed much.

    Slugs and snails

I haven't completely solved my slug and snail problem but I've gotten it under control by spending 30 minutes, here and there, manually collecting them and throwing them in the canal. (The Sheepshead eat them right up). The best time to collect is early in the morning when dew or rain is...

    How's my spacing?

Young palms can be just as attractive as big ones, and most palms can be moved at any stage of growth. You can always grow them out and move them later. I agree with Dean, smaller palms are better for the landscape. Also more managable.

    An abundance of Pseudophoenix Sargentii...ideas?

Palm trees have a tendancy to "grow" on you. A year or two from now you may have some neat ideas to use them on location. Here in Tampa we are planning on using specific palm seedlings as a ground cover. A few years ago I never would have dreamed an idea like that, now I'm excited about it...

    Croton scale - what's working

This is what the good guys look like. Meally Bug Destroyers, aka juvenile lady bugs. These wiped out all the scale in my yard a while back. The scale came back, but now these little critters have returned and are on about six crotons. Hopfully they will do the trick again.

    Poopsie McGuillicutty

This one is a fast and robust grower, yellow splotches near the base of the veins eventually turning pink. Needs medium light to look best. Mine is big, ready for air layers in the spring.

I need palm recommendations for new croton area.

I bought a few at home depot for $13 about 12 yrs ago. They've grown up and been cut down. My opinion is they are nice when they are young and you can see the "teddy bear fur", but grow quickly and the fronds have a very upright growth habit whhich is not my favorite.
