    Big leaves

Helen Edge can give you a lot of different looks...for years I drove by the "discovery" thinking it was a Petra, but one year it looked very different, so I collected it. The rest is history....

    Dropping leaves

Re: Zanzibar, I've been zapping mine since spring with the Miracle Grow azalea liquid fertilizer, used as a spray on the leaves. This gives them a tremendous shot of nitrogen (about 30%) and they love it. So I don't think nitrogen (at least in this form) is the problem.

Yes, mine has the pinkish/reddish petioles too. I bought it at a nursery years ago, and have only seen it once again, at a different nursery. Naturally, neither were labeled.

Speaking of Gen Paget, this is a sport from one. Has anybody seen this sport before, and if so, does it have an established name? Also, can anybody identify the other croton?

    I Don't Understand ?

I've never seen a Krakatoa, but if it is a Helen Edge, I agree it really needs some sun. Having said that, I do have a small one that gets mostly shade and the color is much more vibrant. Perhaps because the only fertilizer I use these days is liquid azalea fertilizer as a foliar spray. It has...

    The Passing of John Bender

Dr. Brown said that Mr. Bender had "the best collection of quality crotons anywhere." He will be missed.

    Question about air layers

Anna, if I recall correctly, you are in Sarasota? What you need for optimum growth is to do air layers at that time of year when the nightime temperature is consistently 70 degrees or warmer (usually in May; this current cool spell is atypical)

    I'm Thinking Croton Tour ...

in the Tampa Bay area, the USF sale is the 13th & 14th; Green Thumb Festival is the 27th & 28th, so how about 4/6 or 4/20? Either Coast...

    A Few Months of Flamingo

Scott, Mark Peters has some; I bought one from him at a USF sale a while back. Mine's not as colorful (so far). You can reach him at 772-240-2811. His nursery is in Ft. Pierce.

    If Not Johannis Then?

I got a similar plant from a nursery which also had it labeled as Johannis. Dr. Brown's 1st book says that Johnannis has yellow highlights ,but all of the Johannis I've ever seen has the yellow turning into ivory. To me, this looks more like the South Pacific in Dr. Brown's 2nd book

    Predator at Night

I had something nibbling on the new growth on my crotons years ago; it was diagnosed as roof rats by an urban forester. It's hard to control rats; you could try snap traps first to see if you do have a rat problem at all; if so, you could also try baited traps; I got mine from the City oF St...

    growing crotons from seed

Does anybody who has had good luck with growing croton seedlings have a few tips you would like to share? Most of my attempts have had "failure to thrive" syndrome

    State of the "Society"

Microsoft publisher, which is what the Society used and is the format that professional printers want. In my view (having worked with it for years) it is better than Word or other word processing programs, because it offers greater flexibility and is easier to work with re: graphics and other...
